Brugmansia and Datura - Will they Cross?

People ask if these closely-related plants can be hybridized - often with the intent of producing a
purple brugmansia or a pink datura (neither exist yet…). Crosses have been made, but require
advanced techniques, such as embryo culture. The following Brugmansia x Datura hybrids were
produced by Gweneth L. Carson (1945) and Prakash Joshi (1949) as part of their Ph.D. research
at Smith College.
