Tomato and Tobacco Hornworms 
and other Caterpillars 

 

Tomato and Tobacco Hornworms are huge caterpillars that can grow as long as 4 inches, and as big around as your finger. These caterpillars are the larvae of the hawk moth or sphinx moth and have a wing span of 4-5 inches.
Tomato Hornworms are green and have eight white diagonal stripes, and an obvious black horn on their backend. Tobacco Hornworms have seven stripes and the horn is red.

1 - Caterpillars of all kinds are attracted to Brugmansia and Datura!
2 - Hornworms and a few other kinds of caterpillars are perfect color matches to Brugmansia making them  difficult to spot at first glance. 
3 - You will normally find them on the bottom sides of leaves and hanging on leaf stems. 
4 - Hornworms and other caterpillars can devour a plants leaves overnight. 
5 - Hornworms are especially attracted to Datura. They have been noted to seek out and devour Datura plants before they move on to Brugmansia.  It is advisable to keep Datura away from your Brugmansia!
 
Caterpillar infestation symptoms:
1- Leaves have obvious holes or huge chunks are missing.
2- Green droppings (caterpillar doo-doo) is scattered on leaves.
3- Smaller Datura and Brugmansia plants are totally stripped of leaves overnight.
 
You might consider collecting the live caterpillars in a container and releasing them miles away from your growing area!
