International Cultivar Registration Authority (ICRA) for Brugmansia and Datura

Registry Guidelines

Please understand that "registering should not be about racing to name every seedling that flowers!" Before you consider registering a name with our ICRA please make sure you read, understand and follow the guidelines of naming a new cultivar. We will gladly assist you in every way possible so please feel free to contact the Registrar

A cultivar name cannot be registered for a single plant. The original single plant from which a clone ultimately derives must have been successfully propagated, and the characteristics of the individual members of the clone must have been compared with the original plant and found to be identical.

Although the ICRA will ensure eventual establishment for a registered cultivar name, the precedence is not fixed until publication. Registrants may thus wish to publish a new cultivar name themselves, following registration, to ensure that precedence of their cultivar name is not affected.

New Registered Cultivar Names are published twice a year
in the American Brugmansia and Datura Society's publication "The Trumpeter"

Guide for Forming New Cultivar Names by Piers Trehane.

We will print our history/checklist in hardcopy and distribute it to various institutions for their records. A form of this history/checklist will be available online to the public at the end of July 2005. Until then please contact the Registrar or the Collection Point Officials to find out if the name you wish to register is on that list.
