What are you trading? Become familiar with the proper names and descriptions of Brugmansia & Datura! You never know for sure what you'll be receiving when you trade for odd names or by color only. Chances are high that you already have it which can result in a wasted trade, wasted money, and wasted time! ABADS currently has 600+ named Brugmansia listed. How many on this list are multiple names for the same cultivar? Everyone has a different opinion as to what is pink, salmon, peach, or coral. Collecting and trading brugs by the color only (with no names), adds much confusion to the world of trades and hybridizing records.
Be a Responsible Brugmansia Collector, Grower, and Trader! If you are not sure about the health of your plant "do not trade!" It is always a wise decision to keep trades and purchases you receive isolated from your collection until you can evaluate them and you feel assured they are reasonably healthy. |
| How do I pack rooted and unrooted Brugmansia cuttings to ship? |
| Cool Weather: |
| Wrap the bottom half of the unrooted cuttings with wet paper napkins or paper towels. Place the wrapped cuttings in a zip lock baggie. |
| Hot Weather: |
| When it's hot outside, enclosing the cuttings and plants in plastic is not a good thing to do. High heat causes normally sleeping viruses to wake up and escalate at an incredibly fast rate. It's possible that the cuttings and plants will arrive at their destination in yellow, wilty or mushy condition. |
| Wrap the bottom half of the rooted or unrooted cuttings in wet paper towels and then wrap the same end in tinfoil. Leave the top halves of the cuttings exposed to air. |
| Shipping Brugmansia and Datura Plants |
| Wash as much soil as you can from the roots (adds to shipping weight and cost). Remove largest leaves. Wrap root ball in wet paper towels and wrap again with tinfoil. B. Herrenhauser Garten resents root disturbance. It's best to leave the soil intact when shipping this particular brug. |
Waxed Cuttings |
| Waxed cuttings is a method that has been used by professionals for many years. Sealing the cuts (wounds) on both ends helps to keep the cuttings hydrated and prevents virus and disease from entering. |
| Place bee's wax in pot or heat proof bowl. Place the pot or bowl on top of another container that is filled with hot water. When the wax starts to melt, insert a tooth pick and make sure you can touch the wax without getting burned. If not tip cuttings, insert both ends of the cutting ¼" in the wax. To remove the wax use your fingers or a small knife. Do not use hot water to remove the wax as this can cause severe damage to cells and prevent the cutting from rooting! Packing The Box |
| Always use some kind of cushioning packing material such as shredded paper, styrofoam pieces, or wadded plastic grocery bags, to help keep the cuttings or plants from getting slammed around in the box. Always mail priority regardless of the way you pack them! |

Effective January 22, 2002, APHIS rules and regulations concerning imported plants of all kinds became mandatory! Brugmansia and Datura are restricted genera. Plants and cuttings, both trades and purchases, imported from other countries require a quarantine period of 2 years (on your property), with supervised APHIS inspections, before you are free to trade them, sell them, or use them for hybridizing purposes. Canadian trades will only require a Phytosanitary Certificate with no quarantine period if the plants have already been in Canada for 2 years. Phytosanitary Certificate - Plant Importing Procedures and Responsibilities of Plant Importers All plant parts including roots, with the exception of seeds and pollen. Seeds Pollen You will be held accountable for diseases transmitted due to your illegal imports ! You can be fined as much as $10,000 if you are caught with illegally imported plants! |
